The Beginning

When Greg first walked through the doors at Eaton Recreation Centre, his goal was very practical - to strengthen his muscles and support his health following a serious car accident back in 1969, which continues to affect the nerves supplying his muscles. But what started as a way to improve his physical wellbeing has turned into something much more.

Despite the challenges he faces, Greg has made the gym a regular part of his routine and, perhaps surprisingly, he's found himself genuinely enjoying every visit. In fact, he now looks forward to coming back!

For Greg, it's not just about building strength. It's about staying active, maintaining flexibility, supporting his overall wellbeing and making time for himself. He's also discovered one of the best things about being part of our gym community - the people.

Community and friendships

Over time, Greg has connected with fellow members, particularly those from the older generation who share similar goals of staying mobile, healthy and independent. There's always time for a friendly chat, a laugh and a bit of encouragement along the way.

And it's not just friendships with other members that have made his experience special. Greg has also built lovely connections with our team, including Alex, with whom he's recently started enjoying coffee catch-ups. We have a feeling this could become a little tradition!

Advice

When asked what advice he'd give to someone feeling nervous about starting at the gym, Greg's message was simple: don't be afraid to come in, have a chat with the team, discuss your needs and get a program tailored to you. A good introduction and the right support can make all the difference.

Greg's journey is a lovely reminder that looking after ourselves is about so much more than physical strength. It's about showing up, finding enjoyment in movement, supporting our mental wellbeing and building connections that make us feel part of something.

We're so glad you found your way to ERC, Greg. Keep up the great work and we'll see you at the next coffee catch-up!
